Also streaming on Max (formerly HBO Max).

As anyone who regularly listened to my podcast knows, I have long been obsessed with this bizarre and disturbing case. In fact, we talked about it so often that I created a special audio bumper for it, replete with horror movie music and children's laughter. ("Is she a sweet, young, lovable orphan? Or is she an EVIL DWARF IN DISGUISE?! Here's your Natalia Update!")

The basic facts, for those not in the know, are these: In 2010, Indiana couple Michael and Kristine Barnett adopted Natalia, a disabled little person whom they believed to be a six-year-old Ukrainian orphan.

Almost immediately, they became convinced that Natalia was not only much older than six but also a crazed sociopath intent on harming them and their three other children. (And yes, that's basically the exact plot of the 2009 horror movie "Orphan.")

Through a dubious legal proceeding, they had her "re-aged" to 22 in 2012, and shortly thereafter, they left her to fend for herself, alone in a shabby apartment that provided no accommodations for her disabilities, while they moved to Canada. Depending on whom you believe, Natalia was either 9 or 23 at the time. Either way, she was unable to care for herself.

The Barnetts, who eventually divorced, were both charged with abandonment in separate trials, and this six-part docuseries spends much of its time focusing on the trial of Michael, who also granted numerous and lengthy interviews with the producers.

And therein lies the problem with "Curious Case"; guilty or not, Michael Barnett is one of the creepiest people you'll ever encounter. Deeply histrionic, melodramatic, prone to fits of crying, screaming and pounding the floor, he's not just an unreliable narrator – he's a detestable one. And while his kooky antics make for compelling viewing in a car-crash kind of way, they don't shed a whole lot of light on the truth of the case.

More as a warning than a spoiler, I'll tell you that most of the big questions remain unanswered by the end of Ep. 6. But if you're a true Nataliaphile like me, you shouldn't skip it.
The Adam Sank Showtag:adamsank.com,2005:Post/72526212023-08-05T20:38:45-04:002024-03-21T06:25:37-04:00Adam Sank Reviews "Barbie"
First, I'm floored – shocked even – that Mattel allowed this movie to be made, screenplay intact. Not only is "Barbie" a scathing commentary on American patriarchy, but it's often a scathing commentary on Barbie herself – not the character, but the product. At one point, a teenage girl in the movie literally calls Barbie a fascist... to her face! ("You make girls hate themselves!" she says.)

Furthermore, the movie depicts an all-male team of bumbling Mattel executives – led by Will Ferrell, who's not given enough funny material – in a far less than flattering light.

In short, this is NOT a corporation-friendly movie, and that's to be admired.

There are also handfuls of genuinely funny moments, most of them centered around Ken, played winningly (and hotly) by Ryan Gosling, and Kate McKinnon, who shines as a mangled and uncharacteristically wise alternate Barbie.

I just wish the whole thing made more sense, and I know that's an odd request from a movie about dolls come to life. But it felt to me that the filmmakers were working so hard to hit us over the head with the noble feminist message that they didn't occupy themselves enough with the plot, which has numerous holes (unlike the dolls themselves).

Should you see it? Yes. It's one of the most daring, provocative, subversive movies of the past decade. Will you love every minute of it? Probably not. But there are certainly worse ways to spend an hour and 54 minutes than staring at Margot Robbie's face.

A final note: I want to own every single item in Ken's wardrobe, most especially the floor-length faux fur and the black fanny pack with the gold chain strap. Expect to see me in that full ensemble come Halloween.
The Adam Sank Showtag:adamsank.com,2005:Post/72517522023-08-03T21:24:29-04:002023-08-03T21:27:22-04:00Adam Sank Reviews "Here Lies Love"

I'm always interested in a true crime story, but this docu-series is so much more. Yes, in four artfully constructed episodes, "Last Call" tells the story of the murder and dismemberment of four gay men that happened in the NYC-Metro area in the early 90s; the panic in the community that ensued; and the multi-year investigation into finding the killer that followed.

But it also paints a much bigger picture of the homophobia and bias on the part of the NYPD and, to a lesser extent, other law enforcement entities that should have worked much harder and faster to solve the case – and would have, had the victims not been gay.

No spoilers here, and you're better off watching the entire series before googling whether the killer was ever caught. From the boyfriend who kept stealing his Neosporin to the vanilla guy with the Christmas-tree-shaped member, Adam's dating stories are ribald and hilarious... until he turns the tables with one that is shocking and tragic.

"In that past, all my shows have been a random series of jokes, and one of the reasons I retired was because that was no longer satisfying," Sank says. "In returning to the stage, I wanted to try something different. 'Bad Dates' is about a single idea, which is the fact that I've spent half my life hunting for men, and what the cost of that is. And while I hope people laugh at most of the show, I'm also hoping they take away something genuine and heartfelt."

Ages 21 and over only. Graphic language and sensitive content.
This was not an easy decision. For five years, I've given my blood, sweat and tears to make the ASS the most entertaining, informative, filthy, fun-filled show that it could be. We've broken news – as when Sanjaya Malakar came out as bi, and when Dolf Dietrich and Jack Mackenroth broke up (and then got back together). We've had some of the greatest entertainers in the U.S. on the show, including but not limited to Wilson Cruz, Bianca Del Rio, Charles Busch, Drew Droege, Michelle Buteau, Jeff Hiller, Suzanne Westenhoefer, Scott Lowell, Peter Paige, Peppermint and Lypsinka. And we've laughed our asses off.

But I feel we've gone as far as we can with the show. And frankly, with my day job, corporate comedy gigs and assorted personal interests and passions, I no longer have the bandwidth or the resources to continue delivering the kind of show we do. And I don't want to half-ass it.

I am grateful to so many people who made this podcast possible, most of all Derek Hartley and Romaine Patterson of the Derek & Romaine Show. They gave me this platform, along with total artistic freedom, and supported it from Day 1. Please subscribe to their show and other wonderful LGBTQ podcasts at DNRStudios.

The inimitable J.B. has been our board operator for nearly all of our 260 episodes, and the show would not have been the same without his singular personality, his honesty and his humor

My beloved frost-pig, Ryan Frostig, was by my side as cohost for the majority of episodes, and our on-air chemistry was magical. Over the past year, that seat has been occupied by the adorable and multitalented Steve Chazaro , aka everyone's favorite chubby chorizo. I love you both and treasure our friendships.

Our amazing guest-cohosts – including but not limited to Joanne Filan, Chris Harder, Tarik Daniels, Joey DeGrandis and Drew Lausch (who also served as our permanent last-minute-fill-in guest) – helped create some of our most memorable episodes.

Most of all, I'm grateful to anyone and everyone who ever listened. I feel like we've been engaged in an intimate, weekly conversation since 2017. I hope that conversation continues, both on social media and in future creative endeavors, whatever form they may take. Please feel free to call and leave a voicemail with your thoughts and feelings about the show before Dec. 17 at 804-825-5277 (804-TALK-ASS).

Finally, here's what you can look forward to between now and the end of the year:

Dec. 17: Live episode featuring travel writer Ivan Quintanilla of Traveling IQ

Dec. 24: Our holiday special, featuring musical performances by Sanjaya Malakar, Tom Goss, Cynthia Lee Fontaine, Erika Amato, Patrick Bodd and our very own Steve Chazaro.

Dec. 31: "Best of ASS: Sanks for the Memories": A fond farewell and look back at show highlights over the past five years, plus listener voicemails.

With love to and gratitude for you all.

–Adam

Updating this blog on a regular basis has proven to be a challenge for me, especially as my work life – as in my actual job, not the podcast – has become far more intense than it used to be. So rather than trying to catch up on everything that's happened since my last post, I'll just let you know the latest.

On the most recent episode, I sat down with Richard Pryor, Jr. for an amazingly candid and revealing interview. In fact, it was so revealing that I sent out a press release after the fact:

________________________________________________

Richard Pryor, Jr. Sheds New Light on Sex Abuse Allegations against Comedian Paul Mooney

Son of legendary comedian Richard Pryor also discusses his father’s own fluid sexuality with Podcast Host Adam Sank

Nov. 14, 2022 (New York City) – In a new and exclusive interview on the Adam Sank Show Podcast, Richard Pryor, Jr., the eldest son and namesake of the comic trailblazer, clarified his response to a report that the late comedian Paul Mooney was one of the men who sexually abused him as a child.

In his 2019 memoir, In a Pryor Life, Pryor Jr., now 60, wrote about multiple instances of sexual abuse he suffered as a minor. But he didn’t name any of his abusers in the book.

Shortly after the book’s publication, a former bodyguard for Richard Pryor, Sr., Rashon Kahn, claimed in an interview that Mooney had had sex with Pryor Jr., leading Pryor Sr. to put a million-dollar bounty on Mooney’s head. Jennifer Lee, the widow of Richard Pryor, Sr., then repeated that allegation in a tweet.

Through his publicist, Mooney denied the accusation in August 2019. He died two years later, in May 2021, after suffering a heart attack.

In Pryor Jr’s interview on the Adam Sank Show podcast, the host asks him if, given Mooney’s passing, Pryor Jr. now wishes to confirm that Mooney had been one of his abusers.

Pryor responds: “Generally when people speak up about someone who has passed and talk about what they’ve done – especially someone as popular as Paul Mooney – that person who was the [victim] is attacked. Because they say that [the deceased] person can longer defend themselves. ‘Why didn’t you say something when that person was around?’ So to avoid retribution because of that, that’s why I haven’t said anything, even after he passed away.”

Reflecting on the media attention that followed Kahn’s naming of Mooney, Pryor Jr. says: “At the time, when it all came out, it floored me. People were like, forcing me to say something, and that even made it harder for me to say something because of that.”

Richard Pryor, Jr.

Sank also asks Pryor Jr., who is openly gay, about his father’s own sexuality. In a 2018 interview, music producer Quincy Jones claimed that Pryor. Sr. had once had an affair with Marlon Brando, a report echoed by Jennifer Lee. And Pryor Sr. himself had joked onstage about his sexual encounters with men.

On the podcast, Pryor Jr. denies the Brando rumor but confirms that his father was open about his varied sexual experiences. “I don’t know if he was bi or experimenting, but I know he did – has done – [sex with men] before. He’s never shielded anything, really, from us. I remember he had a relationship with a transgender performer called Sir Lady Java back in the day. And I remember her being at the hospital when he had his burn incident [in 1980]. It wasn’t anything that was hidden from us.”

Richard Pryor, Sr. died from a heart attack in 2005 at the age of 65, after years of battling Multiple Sclerosis. You can listen to Richard Pryor, Jr.’s full interview with the Adam Sank Show here. The interview begins about 35 minutes into the episode.

I urge you to listen to the entire episode, which also features Tarik Daniels filling in for Steve.

Tarik will be back with us again this coming Saturday, Nov. 19, when we interview one of my oldest and dearest (and hottest) friends, Emmy-nominated choreographer-turned-film director Brian Thomas. Brian's first film is an incredibly powerful documentary entitled Amy's Victory Dance, and it tells the story of Amy Jordan, a dance who overcame overwhelming odds – including blindness and a horrific bus accident – to survive and thrive. I honestly think it's going to nab an Oscar nomination.

Adam
The Adam Sank Showtag:adamsank.com,2005:Post/70749302022-10-05T10:30:52-04:002022-10-05T10:30:52-04:00My Review of "Bros"
Yikes – I'm so behind on this blog. And we've got a lot of catching up to you. But first, my review of "Bros," the first gay rom-cam ever released by a major studio:

First, I don't know that I've ever identified more with any movie character than Billy Eichner's Bobby Leiber. (Holly Hunter's Jane in "Broadcast News" is now a distant second.)

Leiber is a gay, white, horny, Jewish, New York City-based podcaster who went to grad school for journalism. He talks too much, complains about everything, has no filter and is a hopeless romantic masquerading as a cynical misanthrope.

My favorite exchange of the whole film is when Luke MacFarlane's Aaron exclaims, "You're intense!", and Bobby replies, simply: "Yes."

It me.

Bros Before Hoes

So it's hard to objectively evaluate a film that I sat through mostly wide-eyed, gasping, flooded with memories of experiences nearly identical to those I was watching play out on the screen. At least for me, "Bros" gets a lot of things exactly right.

It also gets some things wrong. Eichner is clearly aware of the fact that he's a white cis guy asking us to care about his story at a time when more marginalized queer communities, including trans folks and queer people of color, are rightfully demanding that we pay attention to theirs.

Eichner and his screen alter ego acknowledge this over and over again in the film, as if to say, "Look at how woke I am! I can see my own privilege!" And yet, nearly every non-white and/or non-cis character in "Bros" feels like a token to me. When Bobby sits down with a group of close friends for dinner, they collectively come across as a casting sheet, rather than an authentic friend group. I could literally hear the pre-production conversation in my head: "OK, we need two black gay guys, one Asian gay guy, one white trans guy, one cis straight woman..." etc.

The same is true of Bobby's colleagues on the LGBTQ+ Museum board, although they at least get to have some personality traits that go beyond their gender, racial and sexual identities. It's also true-to-life that such a board would be carefully assembled to represent diverse queer communities. But I don't know anyone who selects their friend group using the same criteria, and I'd be suspicious of anyone who does.

In spite of those blind spots and a few awkward scenes that could have been left on the cutting room floor, "Bros" succeeds for me. It is not only a thoughtful and provocative discussion of urban queer life – and especially dating life – in the 2020s, but most of the time, it's also hilarious. I had at least a dozen LOL moments, especially during the movie's Grindr chat scenes and the celebrity cameo-packed ending. And I found myself genuinely moved at the end, even though I knew what was coming, as dictated by the standard rom-com formula, which "Bros" both mocks and celebrates.

The casting is also a kick, with every straight character played by an out queer actor (save for the celebrities who play themselves). That casting is itself a bold statement about Hollywood's traditional casting of straight, cis actors in queer roles. It's also a very funny running joke.

Finally, I was thrilled to discover that no fewer than FOUR performers we've had as guests on the Adam Sank Show podcast appear in the film: Jai Rodriguez, Julia Scotti, Rick Crom and Alex Ringler (whose naked ass has never looked better).

"Bros" isn't perfect, but it's the most fun I've had at the movies in a long time. Go see it.
The Adam Sank Showtag:adamsank.com,2005:Post/70534772022-09-05T11:24:33-04:002022-09-05T11:24:34-04:00Emma Willmann Gets Topless, and On & Dave Tell All
Happy Labor Day, A.S.S. Fans!

As most of you are off from work today, it's the perfect time to get caught up on some podcast listening! DNRStudios subscribers can listen to our latest episode, featuring renowned comedian Emma Willmann.

Emma joined us in studio – it's always a treat when we can have someone live and in person – and the first thing she did was whip her shirt off and use it as a towel to wipe up some spilled coffee. (Lest you get too excited, she had a tank top on underneath.) Anyway, she was HILARIOUS. And so easy to talk to, opening up to us about growing up in rural Maine, her first lesbian experience, how she first got into stand-up and why she's no longer into Demi Lovato. Honestly, the half-hour flew by so quickly that I was shocked when I looked at the clock and realized it was time to go to "A.S.S. Me No Questions." Emma's episode goes wide on Saturday, Sept. 10, and when it does, you can listen to it HERE.

If you can't wait until next Saturday, available free now is last Saturday's episode with social media superstar On Mekahel, founder of Mounderwear, and his equally hot husband, Dave. These guys were extremely candid with us, which was quite refreshing, given Dave's prison record. He shared with us how it was that he went from an upper-middle class upbringing to the world of drug trafficking... and how he survived a year in state prison. I also asked On, who met Dave only three weeks after the prison sentence ended, whether he was wary of beginning a relationship with someone who has a criminal record. Really, really interesting stuff. When Sanjaya Malakar agreed to be a guest on the A.S.S., I knew there'd be some interest from the media. For several months, back in 2006, Sanjaya was one of the most famous people in the world. EVERYBODY was talking about him – from late-night hosts to radio DJs (most notably Howard Stern) to standup comedians, including yours truly. I also knew that his coming out publicly as bisexual for the first time, which he and I had discussed during a pre-interview, would make some of the gay blogs.

What I was NOT prepared for is that this episode would make headlines across the world.

There's no way I could list all the publications, websites, blogs, TV shows and radio stations that ran the story, but here are some the bigger outlets that did so:

I was obviously THRILLED by all the great coverage from these media titans. But actually, my favorite article about us was on Heavy.com. I feel like the author, whoever she/he/they are, really got the importance of the interview, which was not just Sanjaya's sexuality but the bullying he received on American Idol from the loathsome Simon Cowell.

I am also endlessly tickled by the fact that the first 30 minutes of the episode, which thousands of new listeners will hear, was one of the filthier discussions we've ever had on the podcast. Now everyone will know that J.B.'s "thick cakes" require at least nine inches of dick. LMAO!

Finally, I feel like our episode featuring Daddy Cream aka Jovon Joseph got overshadowed by all the Sanjaya hoopla.
Aug. 22, 2022 (New York City) – In a new and exclusive interview on the Adam Sank Show Podcast, one of American Idol's most iconic former contestants, Sanjaya Malakar from Season Six of the long-running reality singing competition, comes out as bisexual. Sanjaya also speaks publicly for the first time about the treatment he received from former Idol judge Simon Cowell and from Internet bullies... and well as what he's up to these days.

Sanjaya, now 32 and a pastry chef living in Montana, was only 16 when he first auditioned for the TV talent show in 2006, alongside his older sister, Shyamali. Although Cowell and the other judges – Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul – initially deemed the shy teen to be sufficiently talented to put him through to the top 40 round, Cowell soon soured on Sanjaya and began berating his singing week after week, at one point describing it as “utterly horrendous.” At the same time, Internet bullies across the country were incessantly blasting Sanjaya, even sardonically encouraging people to vote for him on a Vote for the Worst website.

“I definitely had quite a bit of verbal abuse from stepdads growing up,” Sanjaya tells Sank during the 40-minute interview. “So I was really good at letting it kind of wash off my back. Obviously, it affected me. But more than what Simon said, what was perpetuated online by haters… like, the people that loved me were so balanced by people that were literally starving themselves until I got cut from the show. So that effect that I had as a child on that many people had way more of an effect on me than the things that Simon was saying.”

Sanjaya speaks candidly with Sank about his struggles with overnight fame/infamy, even addressing the infamous “ponyhawk” hairstyle he sported in the Top 10 round, which launched a thousand late-night jokes.

“I would literally go to Dean, the hairstylist, I would go to his studio the day or two before, and he’d have like four of five mannequin heads with wigs on them with hairstyles and be like, “What do you think?”, Sanjaya tells Sank. The week that the stylist came up with the ponyhawk look, Sanjaya says, “My mom went in and was like, ‘This is ridiculous. My son is not a joke. I’m not going to have him walking around like a fool.’” But according to Sanjaya, executive producer Nigel Lythgoe ultimately convinced Sanjaya and his mother to go ahead with the hairstyle, saying it would be a “media phenomenon.”

Toward the end of the interview, Sank asks Sanjaya if he’d like to go on the record about his sexual identity, a source of great speculation when his season was airing. “I identify as bisexual,” Sanjaya tells him. “At the time, I did not know, which was why it was so weird for me… I was raised by women, I was in theater, I had a hard time figuring out how to interact with young boys… Everyone [kept] telling me that I’m gay, and I’m like seven. I’m like, I don’t even have any attraction to anyone, so why are you telling me this?”

At the time that his Idol season aired, Sanjaya says he was in the midst of a long-term relationship with a young woman. “I was exploring my life as a child, and then American Idol happens, and everyone’s like ‘He’s gay.’ And I’m like, ‘Well, now I have to say “No.’ Because at this point, they’re forcing me to make a decision, and to define myself… I grew up in a time when being called ‘f-ggot’ in school was the worst thing that could ever happen to you.”

Sanjaya went on to tell Sank that even now, he hasn’t discussed his sexual orientation with his parents. “At this point, I don’t care what people know of my sexuality,” Sanjaya says. “If I got into a serious, long-term relationship with a guy, I would bring him to my family, and they would be like, ‘Oh, cool.’”

As I mentioned in the last post, tomorrow (Aug. 13) at 11AM ET, DNRStudios subscribers will get to hear our live interview with adult video star Daddy Cream, also known as Jovon Joseph. Jovon/Daddy is about to drop his second memoir, entitled "Life After Marriage."

He sent me an advance copy, and honey, it is JUICY. One of the things I admire so much about this guy, aside from his beautiful penis, is that he is an open book. From living with HIV to his troubled relationship with his daughter's mom to his quickie marriage and ultimate divorce, Jovon isn't afraid to put it all out there, without shame or fear. In other words, he's the PERFECT podcast guest. I can't wait! (Also, J.B. is quite excited for this episode. And by excited, I mean erect.)

Bravo Adam!

I have been a fan of you and the show for a long time, but never felt that I had to tell you what a great job you’re doing. That’s until I heard your interview with Tye Blue, you always have great energy with your guests, but it was especially sultry during your time with Tye. Please tell me you were able to get some alone time with Ty.

Thanks for the great podcast! 👏👏👏

So did I wind up getting a date with Tye? You'll have to listen and find out!

Finally, I'm super-duper-extra excited about next week's interview with Sanjaya from American Idol. It occurred to me the other day that he will be the first guest we've ever had who's instantly recognized by his first name alone – like Cher or Madonna. Literally everybody over the age of 25 knows who Sanjaya is! And now he's gonna tell ALL, exclusively on the A.S.S. Get ready.

As always, thanks for listening.

And speaking of the near future, I'm always excited to talk with the various actors, comedians, singers, activists and other talented folk that we're fortunate enough to have on the pod. But I am particularly jazzed about some of the guests we have coming up in the next few weeks.

Note: I don't usually announce guests more than a week in advance, because people's schedules change, conflicts arise, shit happens, etc., and I don't want to jinx anything. But fingers crossed that the following folks appear as scheduled:

Aug. 6: Kelly Mantle – Kelly may be best known as a contestant from Season Six of RuPaul's Drag Race, but they were an established actor long before that, having appeared in major shows like NYPD Blue, Just Shoot Me, Judging Amy and The New Adventures of Old Christine. Their career has continued to blossom since Drag Race, including appearances on Lucifer, Modern Family and The Browns. We pre-recorded Kelly's episode last Saturday. They have a really fun, laid-back vibe, and it felt like I was talking to an old friend I've known for years, though it was our first time speaking. Plus, their uncle was Mickey Mantle! DNRStudios subscribers can listen to the episode beginning tomorrow (Saturday, 8/6) at 11AM ET.

Aug. 13: Daddy Cream aka Jovon Joseph – One of J.B.'s favorite porn stars! I've been wanting to get Jovon on the show for a while. Aside from being ridiculously sexy, he's got a very interesting story, which he's completely open about telling. Here's a teaser: The year he turned 18, he went to juvenile hall, had a baby with a woman and made his first gay porn video. You want to know more, right? I certainly do.

Aug: 20: Sanjaya Malakar -Yes, THE Sanjaya – iconic former American Idol finalist from Season 6. For years, I've been wondering, what ever happened to Sanjaya? I finally reached out to him, and we became social media friends. He's a total sweetheart with zero fucks left to give, and he is ready to tell ALL – from his personal life to the hideous treatment he received from Simon Cowell. I cannot wait for this one.

This despite a nasty super-flu that knocked me on my ass for the better part of last week. It wasn't Monkeypox or COVID... but it was bad. Suffice it to say, I fell behind on my ASS-blogging, but I'm back and happy to tell you what's been happening on the pod lately.

First, the Dallas Steele episode has generated a lot of buzz, as I expected it would. It's available for free now, so give it a listen HERE. (As George Michael would say, "Listen without prejudice.")

Speaking of George Michael, we recently had as our guest celebrity biographer James Gavin. James has written a fascinating and exhaustingly researched new book about the late, great British pop star entitled George Michael: A Life. Reading it brought me immediately back to middle school and reminded me just how many massive hits George had, both with Wham! and in his solo career. I can honestly say that the video of "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" (1984) awakened something sexual in my 13-year-old self. And by the time the "Faith" video hit the airwaves in 1987... featuring a bearded, sunglassed George in a black leather jacket, shaking his perfectly round rump... well, I was fully on my way to Homotown.

God, he was beautiful.

Sadly, as James tells it, the joy that George brought to me and millions of others was not something he often felt himself. Plagued with self-doubt, the pressures of living in the closet, significant personal loss and, ultimately addiction culminated in his untimely death at the age of 53 in 2016. You can listen free to my interview with James (and the rest of the episode) HERE.

On a much lighter note, this past Saturday we had in studio Tye Blue, the director and co-creator of NYC's current musical-comedy smash, Titanique. The show imagines what would have happened had Celine Dion been a passenger aboard the fated ocean liner... and lived to sing about it. It's truly one of the funniest things I've ever seen, and I spoke with Tye about how it all came together... and what Celine herself thinks of it.

I also asked Tye out on the air. You'll have to listen to see how that went. DNRStudios subscribers can hear the episode all this week; the rest of you will have to wait until this coming Saturday, 8/6, when it'll be available HERE.

Finally, some odds and ends:

Steve Chazaro finally returns to the pod as co-host Aug. 6. Stay tuned, and fingers crossed!

We have some iconic guests coming up... prepare to have your minds blown.

We've seen a tremendous growth in listenership over the past several months. I couldn't be more thrilled, but... and it's a big butt... we can't take advantage of the growth unless every one of you leaves a review on Apple Podcasts. Little-A-Double-L-A-S.
(Extra points for anyone who gets the title reference.)

Some weeks back, I posted about an ethical dilemma I was having with regard to booking a huge-dicked and seemingly nice but possibly right-wing porn star. Well, I did it. The porn star in question is Dallas Steele, and his episode is currently available for DNR Studios subscribers and will go wide (like his penis) to the rest of you on Saturday, July 23.

In the end, I'm so glad I decided to have Dallas on; his interview turned out to be one our most compelling ever.

And the view ain't bad either.

Dallas has an unusual backstory; for 23 years, he worked as a local TV news reporter and anchorman before shucking it all for adult video work. We talked about that – but things got a lot deeper, as Dallas revealed an unhappy childhood, including an adolescent suicide attempt, and the horror, many years later, of finding his own longtime partner dead of suicide.

After those revelations, we turned to his politics. Contrary to popular belief, Dallas is not a Trumper. He's not even one of those feckless third-party voters; he voted for Biden. Nor is he an anti-vaxxer, though he does have some anger toward the CDC over what he sees as regulatory overreach. We touched on that, as well as on the Black Lives Matter movement, about which his views are nuanced.

I came away from the interview feeling like Dallas is a good guy whose heart is in the right place, even if he's been influenced somewhat by right-wing tropes. One of the things he said on the show is that he likes having conversations with those who hold differing political views to his own. I believe him, and I think the result was some great radio. I look forward to hearing what you guys think of the episode.

One performer with whom I'm in general agreement, politically and comedically, is Julia Scotti. The openly trans comedian, who made it big a few years back on America's Got Talent, has a hilarious new album out called Primal Cuts. On a recent episode of the A.S.S., we talked about the making of the album, how her comedy has evolved over the years... and how she feels about Dave Chappelle's virulently anti-trans material.

Beam me up, Scotti!

On the same episode, guest host Logan Hardcore and I discussed a list of famous historical facts that are absolutely wrong! (Here's a teaser: Napoleon wasn't that short. And contrary to what Logan thinks, he's not a tri-flavor ice cream.)

You can listen to the entire episode HERE.

In less fun news, I've been talking a lot on the show lately about monkeypox. It's real, guys, and it's here – especially if you're in New York. I have three friends who have been suffering with excruciatingly painful lesions on their anus. You do NOT want this. The vaccine distribution system has been a disaster so far, but please, as soon as you can, get vaccinated. And maybe refrain from humping for the time being, as difficult as that is when it's summertime and everybody's feeling frisky.

Finally, nominations are still open for the Podcast Awards! As a reminder:

(If you're not familiar with the shows in a given category, just select one at random.)

Go back to the site anytime between Aug. 8-Sept. 13 and make sure you vote for A.S.S. and Ovaries in the categories in which we're nominated!

So please vote either for them OR for If These Ovaries Could Talk in that category. But vote for the A.S.S. in the Comedy category!

Belated happy 4th of July, kiddos!

I'm behind in my blogging again. So, in lieu of an apology, here's a photo of my behind.

Butt seriously...

Now that I've gotten your attention, it's time to nominate the A.S.S. for a 2022 Podcast Award! And the good news this year is, we're not competing against any other DNR Studios shows! That's because 1) I entered us in the COMEDY category this year, and 2) The only other DNR show to submit this year was If These Ovaries Could Talk, and they're in the LGBTQ category. So, here's what I'm asking you to do:

Go to www.podcastawards.com

Register as a nominator and voter. It's fast, free and easy, and they won't spam you. Make sure you click the box agreeing to become a voter as well.

Nominate Adam Sank Show in the PEOPLE'S CHOICE and COMEDY categories. (Note – it's listed without the "The" – just "Adam Sank Show.")

Nominate If These Ovaries Could Talk in the LGBTQ category.

Nominate whomever you'd like in the other categories. (If you're not familiar with the shows in a given category, just select one at random.)

Go back to the site anytime between Aug. 8-Sept. 13 and make sure you vote for A.S.S. and Ovaries in the categories in which we're nominated!

Thank you in advance for your help!

We've had some really great guests on the show lately, at least according to the listener feedback I've been getting. In particular, make sure you listen to Ep. 238 with actor-comedian Rick Crom and Ep. 239 with legendary journalist Michael Musto, both of which are now free on Apple Podcasts. Both of these guys know how to give a fun and lively interview, and it makes my job a lot easier.

Speaking of easy, my trusty co-host Steve is taking off the month of July due to his multiple visits to The Woods Campground, the idyllic playground for horny gay men located in the Poconos Mountains of Pennsylvania. But not to worry, we'll be hearing from Steve in a series of live call-ins we're calling "Steve is Into the Woods." (Cue the Sondheim music.)

Waiting in the Woods

This means I'll be sharing the studio with some delightful guest co-hosts throughout the month. For the first two Saturdays, it's notorious NYC drag queen Logan Hardcore! Logan and I were live together on July 2 – guestless, no less – and it was a wild ride. Prepare yourself for Logan's evil laughter after I tell a horrific story about a woman who gave birth to a headless baby.

And he took out his titty.

Last thing before I go: We've experienced some significant growth in our listenership over the past three months. I am thrilled, but I want more... MORE... MOOOOOOOOOORE! The No. 1 thing you can do to help us grow, aside from posting reviews to Apple Podcasts, is to tell your friends about us and share posts about us on social media. We will be eternally grateful for it.

Thank you and much love.

Sorry to have fallen off with the blog posts lately; I've had an unusually busy couple of weeks. But all my extracurricular obligations have ended for the moment... just in time for NYC Pride Weekend!

This is my favorite time of year, and since we're past the worst of COVID (fingers crossed), the celebrations across the city should be off the chain. (Of course, now we've got Monkey Pox to worry about, but so far the spread is relatively contained – with only 30 known cases since early May. Fingers crossed again.)

For tomorrow's Pride episode of the ASS, we're not live in studio (duh!), but we do have a brand new episode featuring legendary journalist Michael Musto. Michael is one of those iconic figures who are inseparable from one's image of New York City – like Fran Lebowitz, Al Sharpton and the Statue of Liberty. It's always a thrill for me to have him on the podcast, because I've been reading his dishy columns in the New York papers since I was a mere twink.

We talked to Michael about the fact that he is one of the most sought-after talking heads in documentary filmmaking – having appeared in well over 120 such films. This comes with some benefits, but mostly, says Michael, it's a big pain in the ass. We also asked Michael what his reaction was when he learned that notorious club kid murderer Michael Alig, whom Musto knew and covered extensively in the 90s, had died. And we discovered that Michael is deathly afraid of my dog, Lady.

xoxo Adam
The Adam Sank Showtag:adamsank.com,2005:Post/69893562022-06-08T10:50:12-04:002022-06-08T10:50:12-04:00Drew Droege, Questionable Audio and an Ethical Booking Dilemma
Dear Reader:

We begin with an ethical dilemma: I recently became acquainted, via a Facebook thread, with a well-known gay porn star. This man has an interesting backstory; he was already known to many people before he began his porn career. Also, he has a truly magnificent penis. But after mentioning to him that I'd love to have him on the ASS – and he said he'd be into it – I had multiple people reach out privately and inform me that this guy is something of a right-winger.

He's not a Trumper – I actually found a tweet of his in which he says he can't understand how any LGBTQ person could support that POS. And he also posted on FB his opposition to Florida's "Don't Say Gay Law," although in the same post he stated that he admired Gov. Ron DeSantis's "approach to business."

That seems to align with one of his main political talking points – that COVID shutdowns were unnecessary and harmful. He seems to have a particularly visceral hatred for California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a man I admire very much. In general, he seems to prefer Republicans over Democrats, which, in 2022, is simply gross.

(Also, one FB friend claims that the porn star at one time was suspected of murdering his boyfriend, but I can find no evidence of this online.)

Now as y'all know, I've had people on the podcast with whom I disagree politically, most notably right-wing comedian Aaron Berg and a certain Canadian podcaster who shall remain nameless. You can check out both those episodes below:

Ep. 184: Aaron Berg Stirs Sh-t Up

Ep. 189: Adam Interviews an A--hole

But honestly, I felt weird giving either of those guys airtime, because I find their views to be toxic and harmful. At the same time, they made for good radio. And the porn star in question doesn't seem to be nearly as wacked out as those two. (In a recent FB thread, he seemed to support responsible gun laws, which gives me tremendous hope.)

So what should I do? Do you want to hear me interview the big-dicked, right-leaning-but-not-Trumpy porn star? Let me know in comments.

Yay or Neigh?

Speaking of COVID, I caught it... again. Symptoms were super-mild this time, no doubt owing to the fact that I am double-vaxxed and double-boosted. But the five-day quarantine meant that I had to record this past Saturday's two episodes from home, with Steve and J.B. in studio. Thus, the audio quality is less-than-stellar, particularly on the one featuring ASS favorite Drew Droege, which premieres this coming Saturday, June 11 for DNR Studios subscribers and everybody else the following week. Drew is one of my all-time favorite guests, but I had a very hard time hearing him throughout the interview, owing both to a questionable phone connection on his part and the fact that I was connected via the dreaded CleanFeed app.

Say what?

I actually remastered the episode on GarageBand after the fact, doing my best to boost and clarify his audio for the interview segment, which makes me sound grossly overmodulated. Sorry, guys, we did our best. In any case, Drew is always charming, witty and talented. If you're in L.A. or New York, you should go out and see him in his renowned one-man show, Happy Birthday, Doug, later this month.

Our live episode this past Saturday featured master impressionist Rachel Butera, another one of my faves. This made for an instantly classic round of ASS Me No Questions, in which Rachel answered each question as a different celebrity – including Sandra Bernhard, Amy Schumer, Rosie O'Donnell and Roseanne Barr. It's truly hilarious. Everybody can listen to the episode free this Saturday, June 11 at 11:00AM ET by clicking HERE.

That's all for this week. Thanks for reading, listening, laughing, sucking etc.

The warm weather finally reached us here in the Big Apple, and I spent Sunday evening on the rooftop at the Eagle, my favorite local haunt, along with some good friends. It definitely put me in the mood for summer.

The fanny pack was a choice. But Paul and Tyler look cute.

We're going to be live in the studio this Saturday, and I want to warn you (and Gael) in advance that I'm going to have not one, not two, but THREE items for "Recommended Viewing." I'll give you one of them now: HBOMax's stirring new documentary, Spring Awakening: Those You've Known, featuring Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele.

I'm not sure how much it will mean to those who never saw the show – I saw both the original Broadway production in 2006 as well as the stunning 2015 revival by Deaf West Theatre. But seeing the original cast reunited 15 years after the premiere of the show that made (many of) them stars brought tears to my eyes. Groff is a simply delicious man inside and out – not that I've tasted his insides – and part of the documentary focuses on his coming out journey. (He was closeted when the show first opened on Broadway.) As for Michele... yeah, I know she's got a problematic reputation. But Groff clearly adores her, and the two of them share a very close friendship. So you come away from the film feeling like, she can't be THAT terrible, right?

Why can't he be mine?

Speaking of Gael, she just celebrated her 70th birthday! And she was kind enough to send me a photo of herself wearing an official Adam Sank Show Fuckery Tee. So if you've ever wanted to put a face to that famous gravely voice – and I know I was always dying to see it – here she is, and happy 70th!

This Saturday our guest will be the amazing impressionist celebrity Rachel Butera. I've been a massive fan of Rachel's ever since she first appeared on the Howard Stern Show. It's one thing to be able to do great impressions of Joan Rivers, Rosie O'Donnell and other widely-imitated celebrities. But Rachel does dead-on impressions of Jane Fonda, Fran Lebowitz and a host of others most impressionists would never even attempt. Plus, she's got a fun, wacky personality herself. Subscribers can listen live HERE beginning at 11AM ET on Saturday, June 4.

(If Kenneth's name is unfamiliar to you, he's the first ever quadriplegic person to appear in a gay porno, and his interview was fascinating.)

BONUS EPISODE: Adam and Ryan Take Over the DNR Show! – Back on May 6, former ASS co-host Ryan Frostig and I took over the Derek & Romaine Show while those two bitches were off on a listener cruise. It was a freewheeling hour in which Ryan regaled us with his stories of camping at Beltane – the Radical Faerie festival in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. That led to a longer discussion of drugs, partying and our favorite gay gatherings. We finished off the hour with a chat about And Just Like That, HBO's much maligned reboot of Sex and the City.

Boy Radio Towers Above Us All – Beginning tomorrow (5/28), you can listen free to our episode featuring the incredibly tall, talented and gorgeous Boy Radio.
Sometimes even Mama needs a vacation. That's why I'll be in Fire Island this Saturday – part of a weeklong getaway, actually – and not in studio recording another episode of the ASS for my thirsty listeners.

But... and it's a big butt... fear not! We have a brand new super-sized special coming your way entitled "The Best of ASS: Porn to Be Wild." Co-hosted by hilarious twinkster comedian Drew Lausch, the special features wild interviews with some of the porn superstars (and up-and-cummers) that we've had on the podcast, including:

Rocco Steele

Luke Truong

Eddie Danger

and a beloved friend of the show (and mine), Dolf Dietrich.

Listening back to these interviews, I'm struck that every one of these men defies the common stereotype of the shallow, party-obsessed gay porn star. On the contrary, each is highly educated, articulate, funny and multidimensional. Which doesn't necessarily make your dick hard, but it does allow you to get to know these guys beyond just their body parts and simmering sexuality.

The special premieres this coming Saturday, May 14 exclusively for DNR Studios subscribers. (The rest of you free-loading whores can hear it beginning May 21.)

First of all, the episode with Milking Coach is now available for free HERE. What I love so much about this guy is that he's talking in graphic terms about his love of jerking off hot young guys – or "bulls," as he calls them — yet his persona is that of a mild-mannered, professional dude. It's like listening to your accountant talk about tugging dick. Here's an excerpt:

Me: Does your family know what you do for a living? Do they know about this identity you have?

Milking Coach: (Laughs.) Some of them do. Parents do not. Siblings do. Close friends do. Some aunts and uncles, but not the parents yet, that I know of.

Me: Do you have a day job, or is this like your full-time gig?

MC: So, it's really cool – This is my full-time gig. The Milking Coach stuff, the videos that I sell through that and the fan sites, and Bateworld. So all together, it's really all about cock 24/7 for me, Adam.

Me: Nice work if you can get it, right?

MC: Seriously, right? I'm living the dream.

Talk About a Work-Life Balance...

We also discussed dick – and a whole lot more – this past Saturday (April 30) when we had gay porn power-couple Dolf Dietrich and Jack Mackenroth in studio together, an ASS first. I've had both men on the pod separately before, and what I've always admired about them is how open and honest they are.

This time around, they talked about how they're gradually moving away from the sex trade – Dolf, to focus on his graphic design business and Jack, to complete his esthetician's license and start treating clients – and what their relationship has been like since Jack's public meltdown, stay in rehab 11 months ago and subsequent recovery from addiction to benzos. I asked them if the whole ordeal ultimately brought them closer.

"Absolutely," Dolf told us. "I've learned a lot about addiction and forgiveness and myself and like everything you can imagine."

Jack said: "Honestly, the cliché is very true, that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. It was real, real shitty. A lot of people witnessed maybe 10 percent of the reality. So it was rough. Coming out of rehab was really rough. I think my brain is still recalibrating to a certain degree; I still have some issues sleeping. So it was a long fucking road. I got down to zero and had to claw my way back up, and [Dolf] was right there... it's not pretty, but it's great now."

The whole conversation was compelling, and we talked about fun stuff too... like how they navigate emotional monogamy and which one of them is least likely to shower for days. Plus, twinkster comedian Drew Lausch guest co-hosted, which added lots of laughs.
For the newest episode coming this Saturday (5/7) for subscribers, I sat down in studio with notorious NYC drag queen Logan Hardcore.

My relationship with Logan had an inauspicious beginning when we met on Fire Island some 15 years ago (which we discuss during the interview), and trouble seems to follow her wherever she goes. So I was rather surprised at how calm, collected, laid back and genuinely self-aware she is after all these years. I actually fucked up and started the interview 10 minutes early, which meant we had an extra-long time to talk. Topics ranged from:

Logan's recovery from addiction to drugs and alcohol after many years of massive messiness.

Her outrageous poolside shows at Fire Island's Grove Hotel and her legendary feud (and subsequent split) with co-hostess Dallas DuBois.

Her role as Shamer-in-Chief of gays partying during the COVID shutdown.

Her podcast interview with toxic catfish and drag persona non grata Sherry Pie.

Her legendarily meaty tuck.

Needless to say, Logan is a first-class guest, and you can be sure I'll be asking her to guest co-host the next time Steve is off. You can listen to this episode the moment it drops by subscribing to my show at DNR Studios HERE.

The Jonny McGovern episode is now available free for all. You can listen to it HERE. One of the things Jonny and I talked about was Logo's groundbreaking Big Gay Sketch Show, which I feel never got its due. Reflecting on his experience doing the show, Jonny said:

"It was definitely a whirlwind. I was at that time throwing parties in NYC and making music videos, and then I was kind of thrust into the high-pressure world of TV sketch, with the head writer of Mad TV and Rosie O'Donnell, who was the executive producer of that show. A lot of stars came out of that cast. Kate McKinnon was in the cast, Billy Eichner was one of the writers, Colman Domingo, who was on Fear of the Walking Dead and in Euphoria, Julie Goldman, who's one of my besties, Nicol Paone... it turned out be a real treasure chest of talents. We were sitting in a conference room at Viacom hoping not to get fired for the first three weeks."

Big, gay and sketchy

We'll be live again this Saturday with two my favorite guests from the past, appearing together in studio for the first time: adult video stars and real-life boyfriends Dolf Dietrich and Jack Mackenroth.

The two handsome daddies had their share of drama last year, and both were very open about that when I spoke to them in separate interviews. Things seem to be going much better now, and I look forward to getting updates from them on their relationship, their porn star/sex worker careers and whether there's ever a day that they think, "You know what? I don't feel like fucking today. I'm just going to bake a pie."

What else would you guys like me to ask them? Leave your suggested questions in comments.

Meanwhile, reviews of the ASS keep pouring in, and we've now had two reviewers request a photo of Steve's notorious butthole. And Jonny McGovern Reveals His Big Zucchini
Some Saturdays when we're in the studio, I feel a particular synergy among Steve, J.B. our guest(s) and myself. It's like we're all firing on all cylinders, and everything just flows. Last Saturday (April 16) was just such a day.

We had Jonny McGovern via CleanFeed audio – which worked perfectly, for once! – and he was the quintessential ASS guest... funny, forthcoming and fun (not to mention furry). Among other things, the iconic comedian/singer/podcast host revealed that everything on him is proportional:

Adam: If your penis were a vegetable, what vegetable would it be?

Jonny: A garden-fresh extra-size zucchini, I guess.

Adam: Wow, how big is it, really? Like in inches?

Jonny: I mean, I'm 6'5''.

Adam: But how many inches? Like, are we talking 8? 9? 10?

Jonny: It's up there.

Adam: And thick?

Jonny. Yes.

Endowed and Proud

Jonny also told us about his experience as part of the cast of Logo's Big Gay Sketch Show – and the fun he had touring with Dita Von Teese (including lots of road ass). The episode will be available HERE for free beginning Saturday, April 23.

For the second hour that day, the episode that premieres for DNR Studios subscribers this coming Saturday, April 23, our guest was the Bateworld star known as Milking Coach. He's a masturbation master who specializes in "milking" hot young guys, whom he refers to as "bulls." I had many questions for the coach, including whether he doesn't ever want to do more to these guys than just milking.

"I've always gotten the best pleasure from solo masturbation," he told us. "About 10 years ago, I thought, ohmigod, I'm so weird. But I can't be the only one who really gets off solely from masturbation. And I found the word 'solosexual,' which I'd never heard before, on Bateworld."

It turned out to be a rather enlightening interview, and Coach had a great sense of humor to bate... er... boot.

Got Milk?

Finally, I've mentioned a few times that I recently performed a naked comedy and music show in Wilton Manors, FL with my ex, Patrick Bodd. We recorded one of the performances (audio only), and I thought I'd share my favorite moment from the show, which is when we sang a cover of Love's Recovery by the Indigo Girls. You can listen to it HERE. (Warning: Listening to this may produce tears and lesbianism.)

Hiding Our Candy

That's all for this week, kids. Thanks as always for listening and leaving so many great reviews.

I believe that is completely incorrect," NYC drag star Pixie Aventura told us when I asked her why she won't audition for RuPaul's Drag Race. "It has now also become the only way to give someone a compliment: 'Oh my God, you're so good, you should be on that show.' Like my level of success is only based on what is seen on that show. Do I have the goods to go on that show? Yes. Do I like the show? No. I hate reality TV. I hate reality competition shows. It is the lowest form of TV because it panders to just drama and crap."

It's a compelling interview, and Pixie pulls no punches. You can listen free to the whole episode HERE.

Shantay, Go Away

Speaking of compelling interviews, I was listening back to Scott Lowell's interview from 2017, which we re-ran for DNR Studios subscribers (along with some brand new content) this past Saturday, April 9. In addition to being an old family friend – he dated my sister Anna back in the late 80s – Scott's great on the air because he's so smart (which is not the case with many actors... cue the shade bell), and he has great stories about his time on Queer as Folk. Here's part of his recollection of the audition process for that show:

"The description for the character originally in the breakdowns was that he was chubby and balding. I got lucky in that [the QAF creators] didn't really have a clear idea in their head who Ted was. So I just went in and said, 'This is how I see the guy.' And what you see in the show was my version that I presented in my audition. It just resonated with them, and I ended up being the first one cast in the show."

This "Lost ASS" episode will be free for all beginning Saturday, April 16.

Isn't it Queer?

Also on April 16, we'll be live with the legendary Gay Pimp himself, Jonny McGovern, making his ASS debut. Jonny and I have crossed paths a few times in gay nightlife, but I don't really know him, other than from his work, which includes his iconic music videos, Logo's Big Gay Sketch Show, and his popular YouTube series, Hey Qween. Now Jonny is teaming up with OnlyFans hottie Greg McKeon to find America's next champion GoGo star in OutTV's upcoming show, GoGo for the Gold. I'm excited for this interview.

I'll start off by sharing the same news I posted on my social media this past Sunday:

Not every great love affair lasts forever.

I’m sorry to announce that Patrick and I have ended our romantic relationship and are transitioning into what we both hope is a lasting friendship.

We actually made this decision over a week ago, but we chose to keep it to ourselves out of respect to all those who had bought tickets to our naked comedy/music show — a show that was very much about two boyfriends in love.

It was surreal, to say the least, having to go through with the shows immediately after breaking up. But it was also, in many ways, a gift to both of us. We started the week in a lot of pain and ended it in a place of peace, understanding and friendship. Such is the transformative power of the performing arts.

There is tremendous mutual love and respect between us. We both did our best and tried our hardest to make it work. And we are both so grateful to have had the past nine months together. It’s been an adventure, to say the least.

The naked truth.

I want to thank everybody who's reached out to check on me and offer support. I'm OK. Breakups suck, but they are an inevitable risk when you embark on a relationship. I have no regrets.

The shows themselves were great; we sold out the Foundry theater for five performances, and it was a thrill to be performing together for the first (and likely last time). A number of people have asked if this means I'm going back to standup; I'm not (save for an occasional corporate gig). It's just not fun for me anymore; I much prefer doing the podcast.

Speaking of which: the Adam Feldman/Broadway episode is now available for free HERE and on other audio platforms. The Pixie Aventura episode goes wide this coming Saturday, 4/9. Also this Saturday, DNR Studios subscribers will get to hear a special "Lost A.S.S." from way back in 2017. This one features the great Scott Lowell, who played Ted on Queer as Folk. It was Scott's first appearance on the show and only our tenth episode ever. Originally overmodulated, the episode has now been digitally remastered by yours truly, so the audio quality is much improved.

Better off Ted.

This episode also features my original co-host, A.D.D. Jeff, aka Jeff Dembinski. Steve, J.B. and I recorded the intro to it back in March, before my trip down to Florida. It was while I was down there that I learned that Jeff had passed away.

Jeff and I weren’t close, but he was always very kind to me and was instrumental in helping me launch the podcast. And I know how much he meant to Derek & Romaine listeners, to the DNR show and most especially to Romaine Patterson, who posted a heartfelt (and heartbreaking) post about his death on her Facebook page. I’m shocked and saddened that he is no longer with us and truly pray that he is in a better place now. My heart goes out to all who knew and loved him. I'll be recording a special pre-intro before the episode airs to pay tribute.

RIP.

That's all for this week. Thanks as always for listening, and for all the great reviews.

C'mon, gay press!

Now to the A.S.S.: Since I'll be in Florida this Saturday, we won't be live. But we've recorded a brand new episode subscribers can hear beginning April 2, featuring NYC drag superstar Pixie Aventura – the drag "granddaughter" of Bianca del Rio. I've been a fan of Pixie's for years but had never met her in person until now. But it turns out my trusty co-ho, Steve Chazaro, went to college with Pixie, so he got her to come into the studio.

What are you looking at?

From the first moment we kicked off the interview, when Pixie sharply corrected my pronunciation of her boy name, Cesar, I knew Pixie was going to keep me on my toes. (For the record, he pronounces it like the salad – not the Spanish way.) Pixie is a fierce, funny and talented queen. But she's definitely no shrinking violet, nor is she a people-pleaser. So what I felt in interviewing her was a kind of tension I'm not accustomed to when I'm sitting in the hosting chair. It was exciting and a little scary. I haven't listened back to the episode yet, but I feel like listeners will understand the dynamic I'm talking about when they hear it.

Meanwhile, the Adam Feldman episode that premiered for subscribers last Saturday goes wide to all listeners on April 2 HERE. In addition to his astute assessment of truly terrible musicals of the 21st century, this episode features a lengthy discussion among Steve, J.B., studio visitor JJ, straight-boy intern Andrew and me about whether tops or bottoms have it easier. It may very well be the raunchiest, most graphic conversation the show has ever seen. I was LOLing listening back to it.

In other A.S.S. news, I feel like I've been talking about the David Hernandez interview for weeks. Well, the free version is finally available, so if you haven't already listened to it, you can do so HERE. And Patrick and I are busily trying to put together a show that will rock Wilton Manors to its gay core.
On to the podcast: This coming Saturday (3/26), DNR Studios subscribers will get to hear our interview with Time Out NY Theater Critic Adam Feldman, who reveals his list of the worst musicals of the 21st Century. Adam's a great guest, because while he takes his work seriously, he doesn't take himself seriously. So I was able to ask him questions like "Have you ever jerked off in a Broadway theater?" Tune in at 11AM ET to find out his answer. Also, Steve, J.B. and I have an in-depth discussion of whether it's easier to be a top or a bottom. (Cue the gay sex sound drop.)

Madame, I'm Adam Feldman.

Speaking of gay sex, our David Hernandez interview from last Saturday (March 19) goes wide this Saturday. David was fabulous and candid as always about his American Idol stripping scandal and how he has since embraced his sexuality and identity as a proud gay man – one who often displays his (flawless) naked body to the public. "I get people that slide into my DMs... I literally just had someone yesterday that was like 'Why are you doing this? You don't have to show your body. You're talented enough.' I responded and said, 'I don't have to do anything. I want to do things. And this is what I'm doing.'"

I asked David what's the typical demographic of those who send shaming messages like that. "Ironically enough," he said, "it's our own community. It's the ones who have felt super-oppressed their whole lives... and they're projecting."

If I had this body, I'd be naked 24/7.

She corrected me on the air that she's actually attracted to all genders and identifies as queer. You'd think after five years of hosting the show that I'd learn to ask first.

Not a lesbian.

In any case, Jeni's sexuality is perhaps the least interesting thing about her. She's one of those people I just find compelling, no matter if she's talking about the underlying issues that cause clutter to pile in people's homes or whether she colors her pubic hair. (You'll have to listen to the episode to find out.)

If you're a regular listener of the A.S.S., you know that my favorite guests are the ones who can go from poignant to ridiculous and back again at the drop of a hat, and that's Jeni to a T. We loved having her in-studio, and I think you'll find the interview more gripping than you'd expect, given the topic.

Speaking of gripping (and stripping), this Saturday (3/19), we'll be live with former American Idol contestant David Hernandez. We had David on the A.S.S. last year, and I was surprised and delighted by how open and easygoing he is – and so willing to talk about anything. Most people in entertainment are out there trying to carefully manage every aspect of their image, but David's just keeping it real. After being nationally shamed for his gay-stripper past – a fact that emerged during his time on Idol – David is out this week with a new E.P. titled "Don't @ Me," as well as an accompanying book of full-frontal nude pics, #NSFW.

He can @ me anytime.

Both the book and the album are a giant "fuck-you" to David's haters and shamers. Rather than trying to sanitize himself like so many other LGBTQ celebs, David is basically saying, "Here I am. I'm an artist, I'm a gay man, and I'm sexual. Deal with it." I love him for that, and I can't wait to ask him about the experience of working on both these projects – as well as his triumphant run in Naked Boys Singing and his OnlyFans page. (Insert eggplant emoji here.)

On another topic, and as I mentioned last time, I am coming out of retirement for four nights only (March 31-April 3) to do naked standup in Wilton Manors, FL. And I'll be joined by my naked singer-songwriter boyfriend, Patrick Bodd. It's because that was his answer to the question "What's your favorite genre of porn?" when we played ASS Me No Questions with him. I've been a huge fan of Jason's ever since I first heard him on the Howard Stern Show, on which he made multiple appearances. Arguably his most famous Stern Show moment was when he stripped naked for George Takei, prompting George to grab Jason's big member and exclaim, Oh, my goodness, you've got a beautiful cock!"

I've known Jeni for nearly 20 years; she did stand-up comedy back in the day and was VERY good at it, BTW. But even if you don't know Jeni, she's one of those people who instantly feels like an old friend. She's got a warmth and a relatability about her that could charm the pants off anyone. Also, she's openly bisexual... which means we had two bisexual guests in a row on the podcast! C'mon, sexual diversity!

xo Adam
The Adam Sank Showtag:adamsank.com,2005:Post/60271702016-01-20T19:00:00-05:002021-09-13T11:02:46-04:00Amy Schumer is Not a Joke Thief

Yesterday, a new video claiming that Amy Schumer is a joke thief -- complete with "evidence" supporting the charge -- blew up the Internet. Here's the video, in case you missed it:

Here's my take on the controversy, if anyone cares.

I don't think Amy's a joke thief. Hers is a unique voice and a persona that she developed for over a decade on the road. I was on shows with her, years ago, before she was famous, and it was clear to me that she was usually the funniest, most quick-minded person in room. (If you've watched her early appearances on any of the Comedy Central roasts, I doubt you'd disagree.) A person may steal lines from other comedians. But you can't steal an entire act. And you definitely can't do so and rise to the heights to which Amy's risen. So my main defense of her being a joke thief would be simply that she doesn't need to be one. She's got the goods on her own.

Now: There's no question that the Wendy Liebman joke is almost word-for-word the same (and very reflective of Liebman's entire act and voice). My guess is that Amy saw it, at some point, decades ago, and it got lodged in her brain such that when she "wrote" it for her special, she believed it was an original thought. This happens ALL THE TIME to comedians. I have "written" countless jokes that I was certain sprang from my own mind, only to discover to my horror later that they were just something I had heard a long time ago and forgotten. It's the worst feeling. But it's an honest, human mistake -- not theft.

As for the Patrice O'Neal riff, there's no evidence he "wrote" those crazy sexual scenarios any more than Amy did. They were already out there in the culture. And if you watch Amy's version critically, she's not repeating Patrice's take on it; if anything, she's RESPONDING to it with her own neo-feminist take (e.g. talking about the Houdini trick, "which is just rape. It's just rape. Like, no girl is going to think that's hilarious"). It's possible, I guess, that Amy had seen Patrice's bit, but what makes her version funny is what she adds to it. That's not theft; it's creativity.

And the Trainwreck movie poster and the Tammy Pescatelli bit are almost too ridiculous to even address. (Note to whoever's behind the video: Actors don't design their own movie posters, and Tammy's 10-second joke about women dressing their men badly on purpose is just not that groundbreaking a thought.)

Which leaves the Kathleen Madigan jokes that show up on Inside Amy Schumer. To me, these are the most problematic, not just because they're so similar to what Amy did on the show but because they're extremely specific, original thoughts. It's not just about someone hitting you when you go to eat something -- it's specifically about slapping -- and then there's the follow-up joke about having someone work you out while you're unconscious. No two comics are going to come up with BOTH these ideas independently, so I would say these were clearly lifted from Madigan's act. But the question is, who lifted them? Amy has a team of writers on her show. Did one of them inadvertently or intentionally repeat something he or she had heard Kathleen do? Probably. Did Amy herself steal the jokes, or was she aware of their provenance? Probably not. Because again, why would she? Why expose herself to this kind of shitstorm when she and her writers have plenty of original ideas on their own?

Bottom line: The only person responsible for Amy Schumer's success is Amy Schumer. And it's unfortunate and petty, in a business where true success is so rare, that some embittered person or persons would try to take that away from her after she's worked so hard for it.
